Essential Somatics is a movement practice that re-educates the way your brain senses and moves muscles. The muscles are not stretched or strained; instead, they are released, allowed to soften, and therefore lengthened. The self-care technique, Pandiculation, is taught to allow biofeedback to be given to the nervous system about the level of tension held in the muscles. New neural pathways are formed to allow for lasting changes in your movement patterns.
Ideally, begin with an in-person class or private session to explore whether Somatics is for you. Most people notice a difference after just one class.
Essential Somatics is a whole-body approach that addresses issues such as sciatica, neck and shoulder stiffness or pain, and back, hip, and knee aches and pains. Any imbalance in the kinetic chain can cause discomfort, and Essential Somatics can help.
Most muscle pain conditions result from a full-body bracing pattern of Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA). Before focusing on a specific area, it is important to begin with movements that address the muscles of the whole body (front, back, and sides).
A pandiculation is a self-care technique that we teach to release tight muscles. The principle behind it is to do more of what the body is already doing. In other words, if you are holding tension subconsciously, we will gently contract these muscles to regain control and slowly and with full awareness release them. This process is followed by a resting period, allowing your brain to process the new information and, over time, restore voluntary muscle control.
If you are not feeling better after your session, you may be missing critical teaching queues. The very definition of Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA), which leads to muscle tension patterns, means that you cannot feel or control specific movements. You may be recruiting different muscles to get the movement "done" that is not intended to be activated. A skillful teacher can help you become aware and notice your stress response patterns so you can begin to release them more accurately and efficiently. Sometimes modifications are necessary to address individual SMA limitations, and your teacher can help you with that.
Yes, you can! In most cases, your particular muscular bracing pattern and compensation didn’t develop overnight. It is most likely the result of an injury or years of unintentionally forming bad habits. Bringing unintentional habits to your awareness and restoring your ability to sense them is the first step to releasing muscle contractions. Once you have a good foundation of the methodology and movement practice, you can - with as little as 15 minutes per day - take back control of how you sit, stand, and walk and start moving with comfort and ease again.
