Chronic Pain and Somatics – My Personal Experience

Somatics has cured my chronic back pain by releasing muscular tension patterns I wasn't aware I was holding.
We tend to pursue alternative healthcare options after the complete exhaustion of our medical system. In hindsight, I wish I had done it the other way around.
I had a disc herniation which I blamed for the intense back pain. After laminectomy surgery the back pain persisted.
I did extensive physical therapy and was told I needed a strong core and strengthen my back. After 20 years of Pilates, my abbs were already strong so we focused on strengthening my back and legs. The back pain persisted.
What followed were steroid injections and steroid pills that helped temporarily but ultimately damaged my stomach. The back pain persisted.
Acupuncture was recommended. The back pain persisted.
Hot yoga was praised as a cure all. The back pain got worse
Myofascial alignment and release, massages helped short term. The back pain persisted.
I could go on but I think you get the idea.
It wasn’t until I met a fabulous Sports Medicine Doctor who treated my right shoulder for tendonitis that I learnt about the importance of an intact kinetic chain and musculoskeletal system. My right shoulder was chronically rolled forward – in protective mode, causing my left hip to compensate and pulling my back out of alignment. Ironically, the sports medicine doctor did not treat the back but ultimately cured my back pain.
With this new understanding of how all movements are connected and flow through the whole body I studied Hanna Somatics (named after Thomas Hanna, PhD.). Unfortunately, there are no certified Somatics instructors in the Tampa Bay Area. I traveled to NY to meet a Clinical Somatics Educator and to learn the movements that would ultimately set me free. I had to release chronic muscle tension patterns over time that were blocking my movements and causing misalignment and pain. To become as self-sufficient as possible, I signed up for the 6 month instructor training course and now teach Essential Somatics to anybody interested in taking control of their health.
