Discover Why an Interactive Somatics Massage Is Different from Traditional Massage for Pain Relief
If you've been searching for Somatic Massage in Tampa, you may have noticed that everyone seems to define it differently. Some practitioners combine massage with mindfulness. Others focus on emotional release.
Still others simply use the term as another name for relaxation massage.
At Somatics Tampa, a Hands-On Somatics session is something much more specific. It's an Interactive Somatics Massage that combines therapeutic massage with the neuroscience-based principles of Hanna Somatics to help reduce chronic muscle tension by working with your nervous system—not just your muscles. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT; MA 109601) and a Certified Essential Somatics Movement Teacher, allowing me to integrate therapeutic massage with the neuroscience-based movement principles of Hanna Somatics in one interactive session.
What Makes a Somatics Massage a different approach to pain relief?
The biggest difference is this: Traditional massage works on your body.
A Hands-On Somatics session works with your body.
Instead of trying to force tight muscles to relax, I first identify the movement patterns your brain has learned to hold over time. These unconscious patterns (Sensory Motor Amnesia - SMA) often develop after stress, injury, repetitive movements, poor posture, or emotional strain. Over time, your brain may continue sending signals that keep certain muscles partially contracted—even when they no longer need to be. This is why so many people feel like they are "always tight," no matter how much they stretch or get massage.
Your Brain Controls Muscle Tension
Every movement begins with your nervous system. Your brain determines how much your muscles contract, how they coordinate with one another, and how efficiently you move. When those movement patterns become habitual, your muscles can remain chronically tight without you consciously choosing it (SMA).
That's why simply stretching or pressing on a muscle doesn't always create lasting change. To create longer-lasting relief, the nervous system must become part of the solution.
What Happens During an Interactive Somatics Massage?
Every session begins with observation. Rather than focusing only on where you feel pain, I look at how your entire body organizes movement. How are you standing? Which muscles do too much work? Which ones have forgotten how to participate? Where is your body bracing? Once I identify these patterns, I gently guide your body through slow, comfortable movements called pandiculations.
Sometimes I assist your movement (assisted pandiculation). Sometimes I provide gentle resistance (resisted pandiculation). Sometimes I encourage you to move while I support you with my hands.
As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I also integrate therapeutic massage throughout the session whenever it helps reinforce a more relaxed position. Being able to for example, apply cross fiber friction or petrissage massage modalities can provide immediate pain relief. The result is a session that feels less like receiving a massage and more like working together with your nervous system.
What Is Pandiculation?
A key part of Hanna Somatics is a process called pandiculation. Think about the way a cat stretches after a nap. It doesn't force itself into a deep stretch. Instead, it gently contracts, slowly lengthens, and then completely releases the muscles.
That sequence helps the nervous system reset muscle tension naturally. Humans have the same built-in ability, for example a full body yawn.
During a Hands-On Somatics session, I guide you through voluntary pandiculation so your brain can improve communication with your muscles, support motor relearning, and restore more efficient movement patterns.
Conditions That May Benefit from Pain Relief
Many Tampa clients seek Hands-On Somatics because they've already tried other approaches and are looking for something different for chronic pain relief.
This approach may help with:
Chronic neck pain
Shoulder tightness
Low back pain
Hip stiffness
Poor posture
Limited mobility
Stress-related muscle tension
Recurring muscular pain
Persistent tension that keeps returning
While no treatment can guarantee results, many clients notice improved body awareness, easier movement, and longer-lasting relief when they actively participate in the process. Continuing to practice Somatics pandiculations on your own long after the Somatics Massage prolongs the results significantly.
Why Clients Love Interactive Somatics Massage
One of the comments I hear most often is: "I've never experienced anything like this before." That's because you aren't simply receiving treatment. You're learning. Every movement gives your brain new information about how your body can move with less effort and less tension. The massage helps your muscles relax. The movement helps your nervous system remember how to keep them that way. Together, they create an experience that is both therapeutic and educational.
