Somatic therapy isn’t about fixing your body — it’s about learning to listen to yourself from the inside out.

Essential Somatics, based on Thomas Hanna, is more than a set of movements or exercises. It’s an educational approach to somatics healing that supports autonomy and self-agency, helping you develop the ability to sense, understand, and care for yourself over time. Rather than relying on external corrections or passive treatments, somatic learning empowers you to become an active participant in your own well-being and reducing tension and chronic pain.

At the heart of somatics therapy is a simple but powerful idea: we don’t work with bodies — we work with somas.

soma is the body as it is experienced from the inside. No one else can fully know what it feels like to be you. Your sensations, movement habits, personal history, and nervous system responses are uniquely yours — and this lived experience is the foundation of true somatic healing.

From an Essential Somatics perspective, there is nothing to “fix.” Instead, there is something to notice, explore, and understand.

Hanna Somatics recognizes that you are an integrated system. Mental, emotional, and physical experiences are not separate; they are lived and expressed together. Through gentle, intentional movement, somatic therapy helps you sense yourself more clearly, release unnecessary muscular tension, and improve how you function and feel in everyday life.

For many people, this approach taught at Somatics Tampa is a relief. There is no ideal posture to achieve, no movement to perform perfectly, and no external standard to meet. Your role is simply to pay attention as you move — slowly, gently, and with curiosity. Learning happens from the inside out.

Over time, this way of working becomes even more meaningful. Rather than chasing outcomes or “better” movement, Somatics practice invites you to refine your awareness, trust your internal sensations, and respond to what you notice. This is where true autonomy develops — not only in how you move, but in how you relate to yourself.
